How Long Does New Concrete Take to Cure?

When can you walk on it, drive on it, or put furniture on it? Here's a simple timeline for new concrete.

One of the most common questions we get after a pour is, "When can I use it?" Concrete hardens quickly, but it keeps gaining strength for weeks. Here's a general timeline. We'll always give you specific guidance for your project and the weather.

The general timeline

Time after pourWhat you can do
24–48 hoursLight foot traffic
About 7 daysDrive passenger cars on a driveway, and set patio furniture
About 28 daysConcrete reaches its design strength, so heavy trucks and equipment are OK

Why does curing take so long?

Concrete doesn't "dry" like paint. It cures through a chemical reaction between cement and water called hydration. That reaction keeps going for weeks, and it needs moisture to do its job. That's why keeping new concrete from drying out too fast helps it reach full strength.

What affects curing time?

  • Temperature: Cold slows curing way down, and very hot weather can dry the surface too fast.
  • Humidity and wind: Dry, windy days pull moisture out of the surface.
  • Mix and thickness: Thicker slabs and different mixes behave differently.

Tips for the first month

  1. Keep foot traffic, pets and bikes off for the first day or two.
  2. Wait about a week before driving on a new driveway, and keep heavy trucks off for about a month.
  3. Avoid de-icing salts during the first winter.
  4. Don't drag furniture or sharp objects across new decorative concrete.
